It's important to understand different areas may have more or less chemicals in their water, so ask your local water utility for its annual water quality report or get your water tested. This may be available online as well. Some areas may totally be in the clear for clean tap water and may even contain natural minerals like calcium, magnesium, and sodium that can be beneficial. In this case, drink up, darlin'!

Whether pregnant, not pregnant, trying to get pregnant...well, you get the picture, do your best to avoid drinking tap water, unless the above applies to you and your area.

Why you ask?
There can be many unregulated contaminants in our tap water, which can be harmful to you and especially you prego mamas with a tiny baby in your womb.

KEY WORDS: "MAY" and "CAN"

Bacteria and nitrates can make their way into our water and potentially the following harmful elements:
  1. Mercury
  2. Lead
  3. Chlorine
  4. Fluoride
  5. Synthetic Estrogen
  6. Antiobiotics

Opt for filtered water if feasible.

Two Most Common Water Filter Technologies:
  • Carbon filters (pitcher, tap-mounted or large dispenser) are affordable and can reduce many common water contaminants, like lead and byproducts of treatment processes.
    • Order online for around $100.
    • On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the least contaminated) this rates at about a 6.
  • Reverse osmosis filters remove contaminants that carbon filters can't eliminate, like arsenic and perchlorate (rocket fuel), but can be costly- around $1000. Yikes!
    • Perchlorates can be harmful to your thyroid. Mamas who are pregnant or who are wanting to get pregnant- an underactive thyroid can affect conception.
      • On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the least contaminated) this rates at about a 9

Now drink that H2O and hydrate, gurrrrrl!
